SaS Calls on Matecna to Implement EU Directive on Dual Food Standards

Bratislava, June 26 (TASR) - Head of the Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party Richard Sulik stated on Wednesday that the EU directive on dual-quality food standards needs to be transposed into Slovak legislation as soon as possible, as only then will it be possible to say whether producers are misleading consumers or not. "Since the directive was adopted there's been a ban on selling different products in the same packaging," he said, adding that all that remains now is to implement this. According to him, his party has already called on Agriculture Minister Gabriela Matecna (Slovak National Party/SNS) to present a bill, but to no avail so far. "I call on her again to present such a bill by the session in September at the latest because only when that's done can we say whether a producer is lying to consumers by putting products of different quality in the same packaging, with, of course, the worse, lower quality version being sent to the eastern market," stated Sulik. He noted that a EU report that compared products in various countries states that different-quality products were sold in identical packaging in 9 percent of cases. zel/df
