Richter: We Want to Reduce Fatal Occupational Injuries to Zero

Bratislava, April 24 (TASR) - Although fatal occupational accident statistics have been declining for two decades and recorded a historic low last year, 38 dead workers is still too many, with a long-term goal of the Labour, Social Affairs and Family Ministry being that the National Labour Inspectorate (NIP) should not have to deal with deadly occupational accidents at all, Labour Minister Jan Richter (Smer-SD) said on Wednesday after the end of the commemorative assembly on the occasion of the World Day for Prevention of Occupational Diseases and Occupational Accidents. "It's still too many," said the minister. "It must be our challenge to reach the goal that my colleagues at the National Labour Inspectorate don't have to deal with anything in terms of accidents at work. Let them deal more with illegal work and compliance with the Labour Code. That's my appeal," said Richter. Along with a record low number of fatal occupational injuries, Slovakia also registered a similar development in the number of serious occupational injuries. Last year, 69 people were seriously injured in their job, while in recent years this number has never fallen below a hundred. am/mcs
