Trade Association: European Commission Might Suspend Special Levy

21. februára 2019 13:31
Bratislava, February 21 (TASR) - First vice-chair of the Trade Association Pavol Konstiak stated at a press conference held on Thursday that the European Commission might suspend the special levy on food chain stores in Slovakia. "According to information at my disposal, the European Commission might issue a provisional measure to suspend the levy by the end of March," stated Konstiak. MPs overrode the president's veto on the levy on December 13 and approved it in its original wording. The levy entered into force on January 1, obliging chain stores to pay 2.5 percent of their net turnover. The special levy was prepared by MPs of Slovak National Party (SNS). They think that there's a need to create new mechanisms to support domestic food production and the agricultural sector in order to create a fairer market. The levy doesn't concern small and medium-sized enterprises, business alliances and shops located in regions falling under the law on the so-called least-developed regions. zel/df
