Glvac Rejects Abuse of the Migration Issue to Gain Popularity

Bratislava, November 20 (TASR) - The senior governing Smer-SD party is sticking to its principles on migration and refuses to use this issue to gain any personal position, Parliamentary Vice-chair Martin Glvac (Smer-SD) said on Tuesday in connection with the UN Global Compact on Migration, TASR learnt on the same day. "The positions of the Smer-SD party are well known and understandable. One just needs to look into the past. It was just the Government led by the Smer-SD chairman that, despite many doubters, filed a motion with the EU Court of Justice on mandatory quotas for migrants. Today we all know that our attitude on migration has been right," added Glvac. In connection with the compact, Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak (a Smer-SD nominee) said that he doesn't wish to participate in partisan disputes and views the discussion on objections to the UN Global Compact on Migration as nothing but an effort to score political points in the domestic political arena. He admitted he is willing to consider his resignation, if Parliament adopts a stance that Slovakia won't join the compact. A total of 193 UN-member states agreed to adopt the migration compact in September 2016. The main goal of the 34-page document is to improve the organisation of migration flows and strengthen migrants' rights. am/mcs
