Gajdos: Defence Ministry Able to Use Approved Budget in Efficient Manner

Bratislava, October 11 (TASR) - In a reaction to the 2019 state budget approved by the Cabinet on Wednesday (October 10), Defence Minister Peter Gajdos (Slovak National Party/SNS) said the ministry is able to use its budget for next year in an effective manner to ensure Slovakia's defence and the increased defence ability of the country and its citizens in line with the Long-term Defence Development Plan with Emphasis on Building and Developing the Armed Forces until 2030. According to Gajdos, Slovakia has declared at international summits that its defence expenditures will make up 1.6 percent of GDP by 2020 and as much as 2 percent in 2024. The minister said that based on the approved budget he can say that Slovakia's defence expenditures will account for 1.72 percent of the country's GDP in 2019, while it will be 1.8 percent in 2020 and 1.9 percent in 2021. "The Slovak Republic is thus becoming an unambiguously reliable partner and member of NATO, as well as the European Union," stated Gajdos. Gajdos specified that the money from the budget will be used within the long-term plan for projects related to the purchase of F-16 fighter jets, settlement of the remaining portion of the UH-60m Black Hawk project, the purchase of C-27J Spartan aircraft, 3D radars and Zuzana 2 howitzers. The minister also counts on a definitive project of 8x8 and 4x4 military vehicles being submitted. Over €1.6 billion has been allocated to the Defence Ministry within the public administration budget for 2019-2021, which is an increase of 53.7 percent. ko/mcs/am
