Bratislava, November 29 (TASR) - Prime Minister and Smer-SD chairman Robert Fico said in the night following Saturday's Higher Territorial Unit (VUCs) elections that he views their results to be a landslide victory of his party.
Fico conceded that the campaign of incumbent Bratislava region governor Vladimir Bajan (independent with support of Smer) had certain flaws, which caused that the region of Slovakia's capital is the only VUC which elected other governor than a candidate supported by Smer.
"It's been confirmed that it has its sense when Smer-SD runs itself or supports a candidate of another Coalition party. Maybe it was an error not to act in this way in Bratislava too, but we'll take a certain lesson from it and will adopt decisions for the near future," said Fico. He added, without specifying, that certain 'personnel decisions' may also take place following the elections.
At the same time, Fico expressed absolute contentment with the results of the regional elections, since after the presidential election and European Parliament elections, the VUC elections are another ones won by Smer-SD. "I'm stating with great pleasure that the ratio of the governors is 7-1. It is an immense success of Smer-SD, because the greatest burden – as far as the victory in the regions is concerned – was on our party. I congratulate all the governors, Pavol Freso (the opposition candidate who won in Bratislava region) including, for being elected," he said, adding that it would be an honour for him to host a meeting where he would discuss further co-operation with the governors.
In response to the question whether newly-elected governor of Banska Bystrica region Vladimir Manka (Smer-SD) will be able to take up his post due to the fact that he is currently also a Member of European Parliament (MEP), Fico said in case his activities in EP should become a burden, he will focus on Banska Bystrica region. "I guarantee this region will work like clockwork," concluded Fico.
