Bratislava, November 16 (TASR) - Attendees of the anti-Communist march made by university students 20 years ago on the-then Mierove Namestie (Peace Square) may not had any notion that the protest would set a democratic pendulum in motion, TASR general director Jaroslav Reznik said in a speech at a ceremonial unveiling of a plaque commemorating the march on Monday.
The plaque is displayed on the former building of the Education Ministry on Dobrovicova Street, which is the current seat of the Agriculture Ministry.
"The unveiling of the plaque is an integral part of a broader project that is being carried out by the News Agency of the Slovak Republic entitled 'The History of Self-confidence'. It's an expression of respect and thanks to those who began the demanding journey to democracy," Reznik told a TASR reporter.
One of the aims of the project is to depict the views of elder and experienced personalities on the positives and negatives that accompany social changes. Over the next few months TASR will produce video-profiles of various figures giving their views on three twenty-year periods: 1948-68, 1968-89 and 1989-2009. The project will feature academics Peter Danisovic, Stefan Nosal, Jan Sabol, Imrich Vasko, writer Ivan Kadlecik, industrialist Vladimir Sotak and mountain guide Pavol Rajtar. The entire project, when completed, will be freely available on www.tasr.sk and TASR's video-press system.
